"quirky arrangements, replete with twists and turns, fabulous playing from the entire gang, hilarious lyrical content expressed by a “like it or not” vocal delivery and foraging though a jungle of moods and swings that just cannot disappoint....."

The new album by the Tangent... AVAILABLE NOW

Two years after the release of A Place In The Queue, the Tangent return to studio output with the release of their highly ambitious "Not As Good As The Book".

Recorded between 2006 and 2007 in France, Sweden and England the album is the band's first double studio CD, and the special edition of the package includes an illustrated short NOVEL written by Andy Tillison and illustrated by young french artist Antoine Ettori.

"It's a book based on the album" says Andy, "Not the other way around. The album was made quite independently like most albums, with its own themes and concepts. At the same time I was writing this story, and writing about the same things in a different way. Some of the lyrics in the music are retold in the prose of the book" Read Andy's thoughts on the new album here

The album itself features the work of guitarist Jakko M Jakszyk, erstwhile guitarist of The 21st Century Schizoid Band, Level 42 and Dave Stewart/Barbara Gaskin. It's also the first Tangent album without founder member Sam Baine who has been present in all Andy Tillison's recordings since Po90 kicked off in 1996.

The lineup of the band for this album is as follows

Andy Tillison Diskdrive - keyboards/vocals

Guy Manning - acoustic instruments/vocals

Jonas Reingold - bass guitar

Jaime Salazar - drums

Jakko M Jakszyk - electric guitar/vocals

Theo Travis - sax/flute

Andy In Paris

Andy Tillison has recently been in Paris for a Tangent press day to answer questions about the new album and book. He talked to an assortment of different media, including the magazine XRoads, the classic French Koid9 progzine, and Radio France International, Amarok Prog and many others.

The first of the interviews to appear is now on our FRENCH PAGE

FOG - The first real Andy Tillison Solo Album

In answer to the "Andy Tillison Can't Sing" thread on the Progressive Ears forum... and similar threads which disapprove of political lyrics in Prog.... Andy's first solo album is all instrumental!!!! (That had nothing to do with it of course!!)

This is an album of atmospheric and electronic music which fuses Electronic soundscapes a la Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Micheal Hoenig etc together with prog, jazz and other forms. For those of you who have enjoyed the Tangent bonus tracks "Exponenzgesatz" and "Kartoffelnsalat in Unterseeboot"... this is an album NOT to be missed.

LUFT - a 17 minute ep by Andy Tillison FREE to download with graphics HERE. Very much in the same style as "Fog", this is a track that Andy has constructed recently in England.

Double Talk

Latest CD from THEO TRAVIS

Theo's latest album shows off his versatility magnificently. Based around an Organ/Drums/Guitar unit, Theo's saxes and flutes wind around some serious grooves taking in everything from Blues to Psychedelia on the way. There's also some collaboration on the album from King Crimson legend Robert Fripp. The band are seemingly on a never ending tour at the moment... more about the band can be found at Theo's Site

The Tangent's DVD was released in 2007, along with a double CD of concerts recorded in the UK and The USA. "Going Off On One" has been generally well received and described by one over enthusiastic reviewer as being the "best prog live album since Yessongs". 'Ahem' is all we have to say to that, but thanks for the nice thoughts! Here's a snippet.....

The Tangent to join forces with BEARDFISH:

The Tangent is undergoing a large change. After four studio albums plus 2 live CDs and a DVD, the group is about to take a new step forward.
Andy Tillison will remain at the band's helm, along with founder member Guy Manning, Theo Travis and the more recently recruited Jakko M Jakszyk. However, the association with the Malmo based trio of Jonas Reingold, Jaime Salazar and Krister Jonsson is now over and The Tangent will return in effect to its more project based rooting. The replacement musicians are well known to many of you and are the whole of the young and enthusiastic quartet "Beardfish" from Sweden. The new project band will make its live debut at The Summer's End Festival in the UK on the 28th September. Plans are afoot for the commencement of recording of the next Tangent album, which it is hoped will use the lineup to maximum effect.

"it feels like we're doing what The Band did with Bob Dylan back in the sixties, haha!" joked Rikard in his recent statement on the Beardfish forum

"at last the Tangent have a good singer" commented one wag on the Progressive Ears website

All statements on the changes are to be found here

BEARDFISH - a superb band in their own right and now also collaborators with The Tangent.

L-R - Rikard Sjoblom, (keyboards/vocals/guitar) David Zackrisson,(guitar) Magnus Ostgren,(drums) Robert Hansen (bass)

The Critics Speak......

FFrom Progressive Rock specialist websites in Holland to Hungarian metal sites, German Hard rock sites, UK mainstream rock mags, French Webzines, Polish radio stations, American discussion groups, Spanish, Portugese etc etc... the view is overwhelmingly positive. Just a week after release, the new album by The Tangent, a slew of high scoring and reviews is appearing from every corner of the globe. Not just the professional sites, but User sites - The Progressive Rock Fan Review site progarchives.com took 13 customer assessments/reviews in the past 7 days only one giving less than 4 stars out of five. Five star ratings are currently in the majority on Amazon sites .com, .co.uk, .de, .fr and yet more professional reviews roll in every day with the Italians being the latest to comment:

"Per NAGATB si può usare la parola “capolavoro”, un termine spesso abusato, ma che credo sia pienamente meritato in questa occasione."

(For Not as Good as the Book you can apply the term "Masterpiece", an often misused term but totally deserved on this occasion)

"Remarkable.... intensely personal.....outstanding" 8-10

I might not have the vocabulary to do the album justice 9.5/10

"this is an exceptional release demonstrating prog at its finest." 9/10

"En tout cas ce double album s’approche de cette perfection", 18/20

"die legitimen Erben von Genesis, Caravan, Van der Graaf" - 8/10

"Delicious Agony Progressive Rock Radio (www.deliciousagony.com) premiered the new CD for the American market on Monday 3 March with a long interview and a play through of nearly the whole album. A audio file of the interview will soon be available

AURAL MOON listeners voted the Tangent's Live album "Going off on one" at number 10 in their best of 2007 poll. It was the highest placing for a live album, and the poll was topped by Porcupine Tree for their amazing "Fear of A Blank Planet" album. Many thanks to all who voted for the Tangent in this poll.

Reviews of new album start to arrive. with mainly very positive reactions.

"another stunningly good release from The Tangent"

Read the latest reviews of NAGATB here

"Andy Tillison has really taken it up a notch this time! "Not as Good as The Book" not only presents a fascinating prog-lovers, name-dropping sci-fi short-story in a book with some amazing graphics, it also features a set of compositions that are without question, the band's best work to date. It's everything a progressive rock release should be. I'd say this is The Tangents most cohesive and satisfying release yet. "Not as Good as The Book" delivers on all counts and shall take pride of place in my progressive rock library."

Songs from the Bilston House

New CD from MANNING

The new CD from Guy Manning's crew is based on the stories rooms have to tell, in a derelict house that Guy spotted in Bilston in the West Midlands of England while on tour. Already the subject of Rave Reviews, this album is the pinnacle of this 9 year old project's career, and an ideal point for beginners to jump into the vastly underrated history.

Produced for the first time by Andy Tillison, the album features a similar lineup to last year's Anser's Tree... but the album's style is vastly different, which in itself is a hallmark of the Manning Band's philosophy. All of us here at Tangent.org recommend this as crucial listening. Within 4 weeks of release it had already gained the number one position in a personal chart for "best album of the year"... so let's hope this is an early indication of the album's success.
